Mockups & Listings
Part of POD product photography and mockups
Avoiding mockups that imply unavailable product features
Audit POD mockups for implied accessories, finishes, coverage and packaging that the actual product may not include.
Treat a mockup as part of the item's description. If it shows a feature the selected product or variant lacks, change the image. A small disclaimer cannot reliably correct a conflicting main image.
Identify what the image appears to promise
Look at the mockup before reading the product title. Would a buyer expect to receive a frame, pocket, wraparound print, accessory or gift box? Check the object's construction, the decoration and any props in the scene.
| Image cue | Check against the offer |
|---|---|
| Accessory or visible construction | Is it included in this product and variant? |
| Decoration | Is it printed, stitched or otherwise finished as shown? |
| Print coverage | Do the file and print area support the shown front, back or edge? |
| Colour or material | Does the selected variant have that appearance? |
| Packaging | Is the depicted pack included? |
A prop can be useful context. If it could reasonably look like part of the purchase, add an unobstructed product view and clear nearby wording. When the offer is a loose poster and the only poster image shows a frame, use an image of the unframed product.
Verify the exact product
Compare questionable details with the supplier's product and variant information, print areas and production file. Apply the same check to AI-generated mockups. Inspect the result for altered edges, extra decoration or accessories before assigning it to a listing variant.
Then view the main image, thumbnail and selected-variant gallery as a customer would. The ACCC can require businesses to back up claims they make about their products or services, and may investigate misleading behaviour.
Key Compliance Risks in Mockup Use (Australia)
- ACCC enforcement authority
- Can require businesses to substantiate claims
- Product representation obligation
- Must match actual product offered
Correct the image set
Replace an image that shows an unsupported feature with a photograph or better-matched mockup of the offered item. If the feature is uncertain, establish it from the exact specification or a representative sample before using the image.
Recheck the gallery when the blank, decoration method, print area or packaging arrangement changes.
