Mockups & Listings
POD product photography and mockups
Plan accurate POD product images, use mockups and sample photographs for the right jobs, and check scale, features and variants before listing.
Show the product an Australian customer can actually order: the correct item and variant, a fair impression of print size, and the views needed to understand it. A mockup shows an intended presentation; a photograph of a printed sample shows physical details only for the item photographed, so check both against the current listing.
Plan the image set
Start with the exact supplier product, offered variants, print areas and artwork version. Use a clear whole-product view as the main image, then add another angle when the reverse, side, handle or edge matters. Use a close view for detail, with enough context for buyers to judge the design’s size.
Each image should answer a buyer’s question. A lifestyle crop may show the product in use, but can hide its shape or print boundaries. Where colours use different artwork, check the image shown for each selection.
Printify Product Creator lets you select a blank, upload and place artwork, then view product mockups; it can create multiple mockups for the same design. Printful also names a Mockup Generator, while Placeit and Canva offer mockup tools. Choose a render that matches the supplier product you are listing.
Keep an image record linking each image to the product, variant, artwork version and, for sample photographs, print method and file version. This gives you a concrete checklist when approving the image set or revisiting it after a product change.
Plan a POD image set
- Confirm the exact supplier product, offered variants, print areas and artwork version
- Use a clear whole-product view as the main image
- Add another angle when the reverse, side, handle or edge matters
- Add a close detail view with enough context for buyers to judge design size
- Use a lifestyle crop only if it does not hide shape or print boundaries
- Check that each colour or variant uses the correct artwork image
- Record each image against product, variant, artwork version and, for sample photographs, print method and file version
Use mockups and photographs for different jobs
A mockup presents an intended appearance, while a sample photograph shows a finished item. Neither can establish fabric feel, print texture or an exact printed colour.
Printful and Printify provider-generated renders can help you check product shape, placement and camera context. Confirm that the render represents the exact product in your listing; a generic garment scene may not show the same blank.
A sample photograph shows one finished configuration under particular lighting. Record the product, variant, print method and file version before using it in a listing, and replace or reassess it if that configuration changes. Do not edit it to imply a print size or feature the offered product cannot supply.
Check scale and visible features
A tight crop can make a design look larger than it does on the whole item. Compare the design’s apparent size in a whole-product view with the supplier’s print area, and check the supplier’s print rules for each offered size.
The way artwork appears can vary by product and size. Check the exact product and print area before using one preview to represent every size; use images that match the sizes and variants a buyer can select.
Also inspect what the scene appears to include. A frame, pocket, wraparound print, accessory or gift box may look like part of the offer. Replace an image that creates the wrong impression.
Check scale and visible features
- Compare the design’s apparent size in a whole-product view with the supplier’s print area
- Check the supplier’s print rules for each offered size
- Check the exact product and print area before using one preview to represent every size
- Use images that match the sizes and variants a buyer can select
- Inspect whether the scene appears to include a frame, pocket, wraparound print, accessory or gift box
- Replace an image that creates the wrong impression
Check the customer-facing gallery
After an image update, inspect the sales-channel thumbnail, gallery and variant selections on the published listing, including on Etsy or Shopify if you sell there. Check that the images you intend to show are included and that each variant is paired with the right image.
Recheck the image set when the blank, file, print method or variant mapping changes. Keep the image record linked to each product and artwork version, then approve the set when the gallery and written listing describe the same offer.
Image update and gallery check
- Update an image
- Inspect the sales-channel thumbnail, gallery and variant selections on the published listing
- Check that the images you intend to show are included
- Check that each variant is paired with the right image
- Recheck the image set when the blank, file, print method or variant mapping changes
- Keep the image record linked to each product and artwork version
- Approve the set when the gallery and written listing describe the same offer
Keep support for image claims
Keep evidence to support factual claims conveyed by listing images. The ACCC accepts reports about possible misleading or false claims and uses them to inform its education, compliance and enforcement work. It can require businesses to back up claims about their products or services, investigate possible misleading claims and may take compliance or enforcement action. It does not resolve individual disputes or provide legal advice.
In this guide
- Comparing generated mockups with actual sample photographsCompare a POD mockup with a photograph of the same printed sample, identify meaningful differences and decide which images belong in the listing.
- Showing print scale honestly in a product imageCheck the physical print size behind a POD image, account for size-dependent scaling and show buyers a fair whole-product view.
- Avoiding mockups that imply unavailable product featuresAudit POD mockups for implied accessories, finishes, coverage and packaging that the actual product may not include.
- Creating consistent images across a POD rangeSet repeatable POD image roles, map photos and mockups to variants, and check the live gallery after product updates.
