Recording wash-test results without overstating durability

A wash test is useful when it records exactly what happened to one sample.

A wash test is useful when it records exactly what happened to one sample. It is not a lifetime guarantee. Make the method reproducible so later samples can be compared fairly.

Log the conditions

Record the garment code, size, colour, print method, supplier, order date and initial measurements. Photograph or describe the print under consistent lighting. Follow the care label and supplier's print-method instructions; Printful's help centre provides guidance on caring for its products.

Record water temperature, wash cycle, detergent, drying method and number of cycles. Measure again after the garment has cooled and dried in the same way each time.

Note changes in dimensions, colour, cracking, peeling, edge detail and hand feel. Distinguish a visible issue from normal variation and, if possible, compare with an unwashed control. If only one sample was tested, say so in the internal record.

A result after several washes can justify investigating a print method or updating care instructions, but it does not predict how every future unit will age.

Set the review decision before washing: which change would trigger a new sample, revised care copy or a pause on that variant? Use the supplier's tolerance where it applies and record any stricter store standard separately. A measured size change and a subjective judgement about appearance should not be merged into one pass/fail label.

Translate findings carefully

Customer copy should state the care instructions and any well-supported observation without a broad durability promise. The ACCC expects quality and performance claims to be accurate and substantiated.

If the blank, ink or production supplier changes, repeat the test before relying on the old result. Keep wash results with the relevant product version so the store can respond to complaints using evidence rather than a slogan.
